This book is the editio princeps of presumably the oldest commentary on the Yogabhāṣya and thus the oldest subcommentary on the Yogasūtra, composed by a certain Śaṅkara whose identity with the influential Advaita philosopher is still a matter of debate. The text embeds an apparent older version of its root text, i.e. the Pātañjalayogaśāstra, and is thus of supreme importance to its editors, but the text is in a bad shape, due to only a few stemmatically closely related manuscripts having been available to the editors.
